TBT: The Birth of the BMW 850i

Check out the throwback video below, showcasing the all-new BMW 850i, in all of its nineties’ styling glory. Launched with the M70 V12 engine in 1990, it became an industry leader in more than one way. It was the first car to put a V12 engine in front of an optional 6-speed manual gearbox. It also was one of the first cars to ever use a drive-by-wire system as well, having most of the wiring in the car run through a CAN-bus electrical system.

BMW ultimately spared no expense in making sure that this new 8-series would dominate the market. However, sales numbers are not quite at the level that BMW enjoyed with the 6-series. Mind you, the 850 and 840 weren’t intended to replace the 6. I wonder when BMW will get back into the ultra-premium coupe segment. And I wonder if they would be brave enough to introduce the pop-up headlamp once more.
