E30 Rally Racing Displays RWD Dynamics In Pure Simplicity
“Oversteer” and “understeer” are two phrases that high performance drivers use often about the dynamics of a car, and regardless of which car you hop into, any car is capable of both. You can oversteer in a FWD car just as easily as you can understeer in a RWD car. Balance and weight transfer have a lot to do with this, rather than how much power goes to which axle.
In the video below, Team O’Neil Rally School goes through the technical explanation of how your inputs through the throttle, brakes, and steering wheel can lead to both scenarios. On gravel and snow, those finite limits are exposed even more so, but happen at lower speeds, making it easier to learn how to either react or preempt a slide.
Chris Cantle from /Drive takes us along on an adventure of learning rally driving for the first time, and how the instructors from Team O’Neil teach different forms of driving for each type of drivetrain style. In classic E30 style, the back-end slide is the most prominent, and also the most fun to watch in slow motion.
