I guess if everyone is doing it, BMW might as well join the super car race. Porsche has the 918 coming up, Ferrari has their F70, even McLaren has the P1. Now, if the rumors are true, BMW will return to the super car market in 2016 with a new version of the M1. They will call it the M8. Intimidating indeed.

If BMW had any sense, they’d build the thing with the same panache and style as the i series. There really aren’t any other cars out there that look like their latest concepts. F30post reports the new car would be a hybrid like the i8. Instead of being saddled with the i8s 3 cylinder engine, they’ll fit the M8 with a twin-turbo V8. Assuming they’re talking about the same engine that’s in the M5 and M6, it should make around 600hp. Add the electric motors into the equation and I wager it’ll make more power than any other M model by good amount.

That BMW is even entertaining the thought of building this is an exciting development. Unlike some of their competitors, BMW has managed to stay out of the super car field since the late seventies. Like so many other super cars, the M1 was a homogulation model. BMW built it so they could compete at the World Sports Car Championship. They did well, but it was a never a car that was designed for mass production. Gorgeous though it may have been. So this new M8 might not have a bat-shit crazy V12 in the back, but it’ll still be BMW’s vanguard of technology and performance into the future much like the old M1 was.

Who knows? The way its shaping up with Porsche and Ferrari and Mercedes all pitching in towards hybrid powertrains, we might see this hypothetical hyper car racing in a series for hypothetical hybrid hyper cars. What a world that would be.
