Car Throttle Pits E60 M5 Against Lexus IS-F

In a weird kind of way, this comparison makes sense. On paper it doesn’t. The E60 M5 is a V10 with a 8000 rpm redline and 500 horsepower. Lexus’ IS-F makes about a hundred horsepower less than that with it’s 5 liter V8. The character of these car’s power delivery couldn’t be any different. And yet, they fulfill the same niche: people want a sedan that can haul ass like a sports car. They both aim for similar markets, so why not compare them?

These guys do a pretty good job of that by breaking down what they like about each car in thoroughly unscientific fashion. I guess they could’ve gone to the dyno or skid pad, like Road and Track do, but that doesn’t give you a feel for what these cars might be like to live with. Trust me, I love watching Chris Harris drift cars to within an inch of their life as much as the next guy, but I can’t drive like that. Most people can’t drive like that. I suspect the average M5/IS-F buyer are a little bit closer to these two than they are Tiff Needell.

Regarding which one is the better car… I think we all know the answer to that one. Still, if you’ve never checked out the IS-F, this video might expand your mind a bit. It’s not a bad car at all.

It’s just not better than the BMW.
