Throwback Thursday: MotorWeek Tests the Mid Cycle E34 M5

To give you all another awesome mid 1990s encore presentation, here’s MotorWeek’s follow up to the first E34 M5 review. In 1993, a full three years after the first test, and just getting ready for the cover to break off the E39 M5, BMW updated the E34 M5 with a host of new features, as shown off in the video below by the one and only John Davis.

In their first review of the E34 M4, MotorWeek heralded that car as the best sports sedan in the world, so how could BMW up the game once again three years later? Honestly, they really didn’t.

Many of the changes were just part of the mid cycle refresh of the exterior of the car. New splitters front and rear, a set of new wheels and tires, and some other aerodynamic additions make up most of the changes on the 1993 M5. However, thanks to a new Bosch engine management unit, it did get a healthy 10 horsepower gain.

Personally, I prefer the older E34. It seemed to have more character than this 1993 version. I understand that it’s sort of a bridge between the E34 and E39 M5s, but it’s just too bland for my taste. But what do you all think, 1990 E34 M5 or 1993 E34 M5? Which would you rather have?
