Throwback Thursday: MotorWeek Reviews the E34 M5

To celebrate Throwback Thursday, we here at 5Series thought we’d revisit one of the coolest BMW M cars ever to be built, by way of a MotorWeek Retro Review. Obviously, we’re talking about the BMW M5.

This specific M5 isn’t the best M5 ever built, that would definitely go to the E39 M5, in my opinion. This E34 M5, however, takes us back to the days of awesome naturally aspirated inline six cylinder engines. When new, this E34 M5 actually received the same 3.5L inline six-cylinder power plant that used to power the brilliant BMW M1 supercar. Just picture all that power and torque, except you’d have room for your friends.

What’s even better is that since everyone wants either an E30 M3 or an E39 M5, these cars are relatively cheap on the second hand market. That means you could pick up a BMW M1 powered four door for about the same amount of change that is hiding inside your couch at this very moment. That said, watch out for the self leveling rear suspension. Those have a habit of breaking.

The title of this clip makes the review even better: “No Yuppies Allowed.” It’s perfect for MotorWeek, which airs on PBS, which is full of yuppies.
