Hamann’s New M5 Kit is… Interesting

Sometimes I wonder if the people who build body kits actually just hate the car they’re building a kit for. Maybe they were bullied by a group of BMW designers growing up. Maybe their significant other left them for some dude in loafers, Versache shades and an M5. I don’t know, but that’s really the only explanation I can come up with for why this new kit from Hamann looks the way it does. I mean it’s terrible.

Maybe it’s the bedazzled front bumper, with all of its scoops and weird little winglets. Maybe its the hood, which looks like it would better at slicing cheese than extracting heat from the engine bay. Then again, maybe it’s the rear diffuser. Or the rear spoiler. Or the fenders. They couldn’t even leave the interior alone. That classy BMW mixture of muted tones and fine materials? Gone. Hope you like red and blue alacantra on everything instead. Luckily, Hamann is only putting together 10 of these things. The catch? The cars will cost $235,000 each.

The thing that makes me so angry about this is that Hamann has made some nice kits in the past. Their Hawk kit for Mercedes’ SLS actually looks pretty good, as does their body kit for the 6-Series. It’s not that they’re a bad body kit company… I just hate this kit.

Am I totally off base? Let me know what you think of Hamann’s treatment of the M5 below.
