OBD-II Scanner: Why Everyone Should Own This Diagnostic Tool

By -

This handy little tool can save you tons of time and money when troubleshooting your car.

If you drive a modern vehicle, you should know what the term OBD-II means. That’s because the OBD-II system is an integral part of your car’s computer that can tell you if something is going wrong. OBD stands for “on-board diagnostics,” and these types of systems are responsible for understanding the error codes your mechanic tells you about each time you take your car in.

An OBD-II diagnostic tool should be a necessary item

The first OBD systems rolled out in the 1980s, and since then standards and regulations have been introduced to make the system more universal. Today, you can pick up an OBD-II scanner for your personal use, and it’s a good idea to do so. It might even save you some money.

Anyone Can Read an OBD-II Scanner

If you’re concerned that even having a tool is a waste because you don’t know what the codes mean, don’t be. The codes are different for all makes of vehicles, but there are resources available through forums and your manufacturer where you can find out.

As this helpful video demonstrates, all you’ve got to be able to do is plug the code reader into the CAN socket in your car and press the buttons in the proper sequence. In the example, our host discovers a wire a mouse has eaten through, a quick fix that can be completed at home with basic tools. But even if you find a code that suggests something more serious is broken, you can seek help for the issue armed with knowledge you wouldn’t have had before.
