Carwow Paints New BMW M850i as Virtually Flawless

By -

Mat Watson lets us know exactly why he loved and hated the M850i car for the last six months.

There was an incredible hype when BMW decided to bring back the 8-series. To be honest, nobody was exactly sure why the brand had decided to do so, but similarly, nobody was disappointed by the move. This new G1x chassis (with the two-door coupe seen in the video being the G15), ushered in a new design language for BMW and step forward into a new landscape for the brand. Double-wishbone front suspension, a carbon-fibre chassis, and a 4.4-liter, 523-horsepower twin-turbo V8 are only a few of the amazing features this car presents us with. However, how good is it really?

The team over in the UK at Carwow gave us a sneak peak at what life was like with the M850i for the last six months. As with any car, there were obvious positives that stood out and other things that really didn’t make sense at all. Only having a car for this extent of time or more can you really solidly understand it, cars such as this one are complex creatures. What are those pros and cons? Let’s find out.

Mat Watson, head presenter at carwow, starts off with what we think is one of the most obvious selling points of the car: the aesthetics. It is simply beautiful. There isn’t really another car on the road quite like it. It’s sleek and aggressive side profile and signature features scream for attention in the subtlest of ways. This 8-series is without a doubt a head-turner.

The signature laser-powered headlights are a definite pro, illuminating even the darkest of canyon roads at midnight. The crystal shift knob, while hit or miss depending who you ask, is a beautiful centerpiece to the interior of the car. The 360-degree parking sensors work immaculately. The adaptive cruise control allows for near-autonomous driving. However, it will only allow to to take your hands off the steering wheel for a limited period of time. Good trunk space also allows for decent practicality. Rear wheel steering, heated door armrests and center armrests, you name it this M850i has it.

Up to now, you might think that Mat is hopelessly in love with the car, but he does have a couple of complaints. The first being the “smart key” not being nearly smart enough and the screen being laggy. The fact that the ambient lighting only allows for a couple of different colors, none of which match with the color of the interior. The gloss black trim scratches very easily and the instrument cluster isn’t his favorite. Mat is also not happy that there is no Android Auto or Apple Carplay implementation.

The auto parking feature, reverse assist feature, all seem useless for Mat and says he hasn’t used them at all in the past six months, other than to show people they exist.
