Driving down to your local used car dealership doesn’t really sound too exciting. That is unless you live in California and you live near Canepa Motorsport. Canepa specializes in automotive legends and icons, and this 1980 BMW M1 is no exception. This low-mileage example has been perfectly preserved in un-restored condition. Original paperwork and tools are still with the car, which is a testament to the special care this car received from its previous owners.
With only 399 produced, the Italian-designed M1 was intended to bring BMW’s name to the forefront of motorsport and racing. It’s short life was a direct result of why it existed in the first place: to bring the fight to other performance car manufacturers. And the racing sanction it was set to enter required road-going versions in order to be considered a production car. Sadly, the racing series it had intended to enter was going through changes, which rendered the M1 a bit unnecessary. So, the car made exclusively for motorsport only had a footnote in racing history. But that doesn’t make the road-going versions any less stunning.
