During the ’80s, while American cars were busy sucking, the Germans had caught onto something brilliant. After stealing Ford’s best racing minds in the ’70s and creating the “M” motorsport division everybody knows today, BMW was fine-tuning the blend of sports car feel and practical family sedan. The results were the now highly coveted E28 M5 and the E30 M3.

Today, let’s focus on the E28, which was made from 1985 to 1988, with the video below, which literally just staresĀ at the car for a solid seven minutes. On the outside, it looks like a car that could be puttering around town, with no telling of any extra drama. Inside, particularly under the hood, it’s a different feel.

The engine is a developed version of the M88, a 3.5-liter inline-six DOHC. It made 282 horsepower (286 ps) and 251 lb-ft of torque. It weighs about 3,400 pounds, which isn’t really that bad at all when you think about it being the big brother saloon in the lineup. Not to mention you got all the luxury interior items from the usual BMW standards. That all added up to a usable daily that could keep up with Porsches of the day. Brilliant.

These days, you’re going to be losing your wallet trying to get one (if you can even find one in the first place), so maybe just settle for this beautiful highlight reel instead.
