I've seen a few threads on this in the past, and my search skills must be rusty.
Can someone point me to a good thread explaining why my e60 doesn't kick me in the a$$ the same way my e39 540 did? Not complaining. With my MT, I've learned how to get maximum power out of each gear, so this is of little consequesnce to me. My buddy who just got an auto 550 was questioning this. I wanted to explain to him why - and see if I can give him some advice on how to get the most out of the auto.
I did tell him to stop mashing the gas and feather it a bit more. We'll see if that helps.
Thanks for the help.

I am wondering kind of the same thing:
When I put it in DS and mash the throttle I see my DTC light up and the car takes a second or two before I get the tunnel effect. When I shut off DTC and do the same thing the tires spin and I go sideways. My guess is that I have to learn where the sweet spot is on the throttle so I can effectively launch without power braking and without going through a set of tires every 6 months as this is my daily driver.

Remember that with the auto, unless you put it in Sport mode, it's starting out in 2nd gear.... a BMW accomodation to meet EPA's CAFE mileage standards and thereby avoid the gas guzzler tax...

You best solution is a Sprintbooster or Velocity unit. They will reduce the throttle lag delay. They work by boosting the throttle signal given to the engine when you hit the gas pedal. The Velocity is more expensive but unlike the SB, it is adjustable to 4 different setting and can be turned off with buttons on a control unit. SB is always on and not adjustable.

+1. I also had an E39 540I Sport and it was a lot stronger off the line than my 550. This is a result of the throttle lag delay om the E60's thottle by wire system and transmission gearing. The E39 540I Sport in 2003 at least had a final drive ratio for all out acceleration -- fuel economy be damned.
