So I need a new battery in my 2008 528i ( stealer won't cover it since the car sat parked for three+ months).
Anyway, after doing a search it seems like a simple job( I have all the tools and have been repairing simpler Volvos for years).
Question is; How do I Register the new battery to the I drive? Supposedly the I drive needs to know it is a new battery so that it can adjust the charging rate. If this is true than maybe the vehicle is truly over engineered.
All replies appreciated.
BTW I did a search and no one seems to have an answer about the register thing.

Hi
If battery is same size AH ( Amp/ Hour) it is not nessecerry to registre it to the car , only if you step up in size ( or down ) etc. from a 80 AH to a 90AH or 100 AH , and that have to be done by either BMW , or other that have the computer to do so ,in other words , you can't do it your self .
This is the "100%" answer

There is still conflicting information about battery registration -- even when replacing it with the same size. I think the car stores information about the current battery's capabilities (even as they deteriorate) so there's some merit to telling the car that the older, deteriorated battery is no longer installed and a new, fresh one is now in place.
The following document give some general information on the car's Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) that will help to confuse things even more...

Here is a good thread I bookmarked that discussed battery replacement and registration.. not sure if you read it already.. like it was mentioned above, I don't think this thread had a definite answer in the end.. I replaced my battery last month through AAA and didn't go to BMW dealer to register it.. so far so good.. good luck!

2008? fight harder to have warranty cover
Isn't it interesting how engaging and promising the sales people can be when purchasing new, used or CPO, but the service departments are totally rude, uncooperative and act like we are looking for more than we rightfully deserve!

nowhere in your contract nor on ANY bmw literature does it state if you dont drive your car and the battery dies, a new battery will not be covered by the BMW new car warranty
this is a giant push by bmw dealers for revenue because the markup on the new batteries plus labor is enormous.
BMW warranty doesnt state anywhere that if you dont drive a certain amount of mileage that the battery warranty will not be covered
if your dealership is still giving you issues, go to another dealership and contact BMW NA who will make the dealer give you a new one
