E60 M5 SMG Steering Wheel HERE!

Hi All

I apologise for having been AWAY from this forum since Xmas 2004! Things have been extremely busy for me with work etc.. I have not really had enough time to stay in one place for long enough to tinker with my car.

HOWEVER...

In the images below, you will see that I have successfully retrofitted the OFFICIAL E60 M5 steering wheel to my 545 Steptronic - WITH FULLY OPERATIONAL PADDLE SHIFT LEVERS. As far as I am aware, I also have the first M5 steering wheel in the UK (so Cooper Banstead tells me...)

Some people were saying that this could not be done.........

This is cool! I had fitted an SMG M3 wheel to my Alpina D10 SwitchTronic and I have been looking for someone to develop a solution for the E60 ever since I ordered the car. Unfortunately http://www.bmw-paddleshift-retrofit.com/ has not offered this upgrade so far.

Can I ask you to explain in more detail what you have actually done and if it can be done by a handy DYI'er?

Looking at your website I have gathered you would need the M5 SMG wheel, the two paddles and the ECU box. Is there anything else needed? Do you have the required part numbers so I can find out what they would cost in the Netherlands.

Forgive me if this turns out to be a dumb question...

Since the M5 steering wheel seems to be the same as the one standard in the E60 MSports pack, is it possible to add just the paddles and the Electronic Switch Control Unit, to the MSports pack steering wheel?

I look forward to your answer, especially if it is a YES!!

Very cool.

I still don't understand why the BMW paddles are attached to the steering wheel. In a Ferrari (and most, if not all, others) they're attached to the steering column so they are stationary when you turn the wheel, so you always know where they are.

But then you cant shift easily with the wheel turned, whith BMW's system the padels are always in the same position for your fingers if you dont move your hands on the wheel

So you can shift while turning the wheel without having to remove your hands from the 10 and 2 position which is where your hands should be while cornering. The paddels will be right there where your hands are supposed to be.
