Default xi winter wheels and tires / 2 questions

After much dismay I need to do winter tires and wheels.

08 535xi 18s staggered

I was going to do regular 17s which are 34-40 offset per with the
recommended tire is 225/50-17 w/ tps in a package and happened to check craigs list.

I found a used set off a 09 335i x sedan (e90) for $600
17x8 rims rial rims (never heard of) w/ tps but with 225/45/-17 with snows on them. He says decent tread on them.

1) will they work (are they close enough)
2) what should tread depth of snows be new and what about used depth to be safe.

The wheels might fit but he tires are a tad TOO SMALL!! Search the forum - and the personal classified for a used set from another 5 series. Your budget might not get you into a proper set-up with good tires and wheels.

Another short term option is to find a good tire shop and throw a set of snows on your original set of wheels. Be sure to find one that can remove the run-flat originals (if they're still on the car) without ripping off the TPMSs and get a decent set of snows.

Try TireRack's recommended installer-finder - that lists reviews and those that will handle RFTs - NOT ALL CAN (even if they say they do)!

Also check Craigslist for E46 setups, as long as they are 17" or larger. The offsets will work for your xi and it will give you a larger range of options to choose from. Good luck!

I just recently heard about the run flats needing to be taken off by the right shop. Never had them before.

My original thoughts were to do just that. Throw the snows on my stock rims. Then buy some 19s or 20s for summer. However, I have the sport staggered 18 setup and the snows for these are a grand by themselves and the 17 packages with the tms are 1350 to my house. Close enough to just do that.

I bought the xi CPO this spring so there are brand new RFs on the 18s. I didn't realize they were summer tires. So I'll do the snow package and most likely sell the 18s setup and purchase the 19s and V3 coil over drop in the spring. I gotta believe someone would want to update their 17s to the 18 staggered stance. If not I'll make them into bar stools.
