This is from some BMW document I found on the Internet. Supposedly, most tire shops can read the battery level.
Service Life of Batteries for Wheel Electronics
The service life of the batteries installed in the wheel electronics is roughly 7.5 years.
The current value of the service life counter in the batteries of the wheel electronics
can be read out via the diagnosis system.

There is more then just battery life. If you decide to reuse get a rebuild kit which is basically new valve stems with new rubber seals. Also if you decide just pick up a set just get Beru's which I got my set from tire rack for $200 shipped.

It's more convenient to have 2 sets of TPSM for summer and winter tires, to avoid hassle with reinsallation. We also sell them at CARiD, prices start with 50$ each check them out here: http://www.carid.com/2008-bmw-5-series-tpms-sensors/
