Alternative Tire Sizes

What alternative size options work for a non-sport suspension 2007 E60 on the standard 17" rims?
I see TireRack suggesting 225/50 R17 for the front and 255/40 R17 for the rears.
I would prefer not to go to a staggered setup and wonder if anyone has tried a bigger tire on the front with the addition of spacers?
