Interesting thread...
I'll just bring it back on topic and say that I stopped coming here cause there really wasn't much to talk about anymore. As pointed out by others (swa loved your post), there wasn't much new stuff. But now the F10 is out and people like me are sure to drift back in. However, the driving passion behind BMW is waining, BMW wants to be more like Lexus (just look to who is #1 in luxury sales) and I'll bet this, coupled with the crazy increases in their pricing and lack of options a dealer can specify for their cars in stock, will mean the action will never quite be the same.

Its funny how u old geezers coralate the price of a car to the quality of posts. Whats money got to do with it? Lmao i coulda bought 2 M5's brand new in '08 but i put 1/3 down on my house instead. and still paid cash for my 1ton. if i woulda bought a M5 straight out in '05 and joined this site, yall still woulda seen naked granny. U know why? Cuz i have a f*cking sense of humor. The real decline in posts took place when dranged left and everyone got yelled at for being complete assholes to some of us newbs at the time. Its like i have said 10x over, even though the fogies dont post, they still lurk, which is sad, why lurk w no intention of posting...??

The forum is is decline, there is no question. It is simply nowhere near the place it once was. The level of posting appears to me to be significantly down, in terms of both volume and quality.
The are a number of possible explanations and drivers for this. I'll offer two.
Firstly, ...
The other is perhaps equally subjective, and I offer the paucity and the quality of some of the threads and posts in the F10 forum as evidence. My own judgment is that fewer buyers of the F10 are enthusiasts who buy the car for reasons that appeal to the "car guys" amongst us but buy it because it is an expensive, luxury, premium car with a premium badge on the hood. This is not a slam on the F10, it is simply that these "badge-buyers", who are, after all just as likely to buy a Mercedes, Audi or Lexus when the F10 lease is up, are simply less inclined to register and post on a forum. My judgment is that the F10 speaks to these customers (and let us not forget, their money is just as good as just as important to BMW as those of us who like to think we're still from the old school) perhaps to a lesser degree than the E60 did.
Whether it is the forum that is moving on and leaving those of us from the old-school behind or whether it is the converse that is true is largely moot - the net result is the same. The forum just isn't the place that it once was.

Why going downhill? Persons interested in the F10 who check out this forum find that the vocal some (incl old members) diss the f10 and do it repeatedly (not twice or thrice, mind you, and with the same crap no value added comments). So why would bimmer/F10 enthusiasts continue to be active here? This forum is for those who want to shit on the F10 and it's one up for you.

This thread is like a funeral for the 5series.net
Some good points in this thread.
Back in the day when it was just e60.net, it was definitely a different atmosphere. A much smaller crowd in the beginning, which offered a feeling of almost knowing everyone even though many had never met. Also when a new model is introduced, a certain forum usually catches the bulk of the crowd/traffic. Like e46fanatics and e90post was to the e46 and e90, e60.net was to the e60. I'm not really up on the F10, but I guess bimmerpost has caught most of the traffic. Now I don't think 5series.net is dying by any means, just how it is.
While a lower price may have introduced a different crowd, I'm not sure that automatically lowers quality. As far as car forums, I'm usually on m3post now, and while the M3 isn't that cheap yet, there are a bunch of crap threads and posts on there. Age has much to do with the type of postings as well. It might have the most traffic for the e9x m3, but not the most technical forum....and it doesn't compete with m3forum.net in it's heyday IMO.
Like many things in life, things are never quite the same as they are in the beginning. I've been on a number of different forums, car related and not, and the original posters typically die out one way or another. It's just inevitable.

Just my opinion, but all these complaints about the lack of quality and about the newer members on this forum is really silly. Before you start asking "What happened to the 5 series forum?" ask yourself, what quality posts have YOU provided. There are many "old time" members here that still contribute quality (Swajames, EuroCarFan, Anzafin to name just 3 that come to mind), while others who contribute next to nothing somehow feel the forum has gone to crap. As with anything else in life, look at yourself before pointing the finger, responsibility starts at home.
