The google bot and any search spider could always view the site without being logged in, they are considered Guest users. That must be the case so the bots can spider the site and make it available in the various search engines. After thinking about it a little bit, essentially the banners are loaded from googles server so they can see your IP address and anything else that your browser provides every Internet site. I'm sure they use all that information somehow in the targeting of the ads which is to be expected, that's the idea of targeting to display something related to what's displayed on the site and local to your area.

If the Google advertising helps keep the site up and running, who are we to complain? Plus, you have done a great job integrating the ads and minimizing the distraction. Providing an ad-free environment for contributors and "senior members" is a nice touch, but even if I were subjected to the ads, I would continue to use the site.

As always, thanks for running a great site.

Rob

Guys - Let me clarify. There are Behavioral ad companies and Contextual. Google AdSense is NOT behavioral, so they are not collecting data. They are contextual, so they are serving ads off the content of the page, regardless if you are a registered user or not. If the ad is in another language, the ads will be too. Again, it's purely based on the written content of the language and the keywords that define that category. However, keywords have multiple meanings so don't be surprised if you see an ad that doesn't fit. This is the one down side to AdSense. Having keywords AND categories help define the page further...ummm...for example, my company.

If this is not making sense, feel free to PM me. This is what I do for a living.

Does this make sense?

Exactly, they can see who I am, from where I come and what computer setup I use.

That's why I get ads in German, advertising German websites...

When they can see that, they can probably have access to such informations on everybody that is here on the site, not just guests.

I really don't care if they are behavioral or contextual. It sux.

Behavioral advertising tracks users through cookies and serves ads based on their habits, browsing tendencies and most importantly, sites they visit. They basically can collect a boat load of data from the user and market ads against it. Hence the reason one should never download a toolbar, adware or spyware. Personally, I think it should be outlawed. The US government has already put their foot down regarding privacy issues on the net, but it's not been enforced enough.

Re the privacy concernes sure were all F%&Ked on that front years ago. The web just made it easier for the data collection.

Can you explain the various "status" of members for me ? or is it a secret like with the freemasons

Anyway good site/forum , memory's getting cheaper but it aint free yet.

The idea of using Google as the site search engine is a very good one i believe - i was a big fan of the beta version of googles desktop search engine however I do now use (i hate to say it!) Microsofts desktop search engine, very powerful and returns strong results every time.

To take the idea to the next step Lomag, why don't you look to use Google Images as a search engine for the gallery section of the forum?
