Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a 2003 BMW e60 530D sedan. I bought the car in poor condition, and now I'm encountering an issue: the car no longer enters diagnostics mode. When I connect the device to the OBD2 port, it powers up and the lights come on, but I can't establish a connection with the car.

I've tried both generic diagnostics from my mechanic and my cable with INPA (which I previously used for diagnostics, and which works fine on my friend's BMW e90). When I connect the INPA, it is detected when I turn on the ignition and it reads the battery, but any operation I try gives the following message:

IFH-0009: NO RESPONSE FROM CONTROL UNIT

I'm sure the cable and the software are both functioning properly. I'm desperate; the car is in "recovery mode," but the mechanic can't fix it because we can't access the diagnostics.

I know these are limited details, but it's worth a try. Does anyone have any ideas about what might have happened?

You most likely need a BMW electrical specialist.

 

You likely have a bent or broken pin in your diagnostic port. See you can source ISTA+ and although it will not flash your car, it will show the module tree and detect errors. If your modules are in the red or blue, that means they are in recovery mode waiting for firmware (blue) or not functioning (red).

In your trunk you should have a fuse layout diagram, go through your fuses (or pay someone else to) and see if dead fuses are your issue. Check your boot by your battery and see if there is any water damage.

 

One fuse box is hidden behind a panel in your glove box, the other is in your trunk above the battery on the right side of the trunk. The diagram on my 2006 (manufactured 2005) is behind the plastic panel in your trunk.
