Looks like only coilovers will get rid of the fender/wheel gap

If I had a bigger rim ie 20s and h&r race springs i'm sure that setup would have no gap at all

Depending on your tires, you're most likely correct. But you may also need to roll your fenders to make room or the tires could rub. It'll look nice real low though.
