do these work on Pre LCI wagons, or do they need a adapter like on the E60 sedans?

 

These will work on pre-LCI. Bruce Miranda V6 cables are often the go-to solution for PNP. Appears there are a set being sold alongside E60 taillamps here: Euro E60 Tail-lamp with V6 Bruce cables
I would certainly be encouraging of you to reach out about picking up the cables from that seller, alternatively I believe the cables can still be purchased made-to-order.
