I just purchased a Magnaflow 14816 universal muffler for my 545i. Didn't do enough research on it and I don't think it will work on a 545i. The 545i has a larger pipe that splits into 2 smaller ones and into 2 separate mufflers.
I believe it will fit on a 525 or 530 like Anthony517 got. It is the same dimensions as Anthony517 14815 muffler except for the size of the tips. The size of the tips are 3.5"
The Magnaflow 14816

I'm looking for about $150 shipped

Exhaust clip from Anthony517. It might sound a little different from his.

I may have misunderstood vegastrashed's response on this thread, but I thought that the 14816 would work on a 545i?

I'm in limbo between the Magnaflow 14862 and the 14816, so I'm curious to hear your confirmation that the 14816 won't work.

-thanks

Well it might fit but I guess I'm worried about performance. I looked underneath the car and I see a big pipe probably about 4" then splits into 2 smaller pipes. Then goes into 2 separate mufflers. So my concern is a 4" going into one inlet 2.25" would affect the peformance. That would mean the shop would have to join the 2 different sizes. Wouldn't it be more restrictive, wouldn't cause some back pressure? I mean I'll keep it if will be okay. I just need a second opinion.

I have the 14862 installed on Saturday. I was going to put it on my 530i MY05, but put it on my 528i MY97. It was very loud. I just changed the muffler. The shop said the 14inch size was to small and a "longer" 18" or 24" would be quieter. I didn't know the length had much to do with the loudness of the muffler. He also said there was not much room to put another resonator since that ugly y resonator took up so much space. Seems really tough to fit an aftermarket muffler on e39s.

I have a sound clip on the forum. Check it out. Just search my post.

frank, if you're still up in the air between the 14862 vs. the 14816......i would certainly go with the 14816 due to the nicer, much larger tips!

i currently have the 14862, but eventually changed the tips. they originally had these small, almost stock sized, chrome tips that looked way too small. i'd def go with the 3.5", it'll fill in the space nicely!

Go to American Muffler in Old Westbury and they'll make it fit without losing any performance. It's where I sent Anthony after I told him about the Magnaflow set-up that I have. They're one of the best install shops in the NY area.

Too late I ordered the 14862 already... however, I may follow suit and change the tips to ones like yours. They look great!

true, but you could've gotten a regular muffler w/o the chrome tips.....much cheaper. my black powder coated 3.5" tips are great, did you hear how much they were a piece?

Hello Calton,
Does American Muffler have Magnaflow mufflers in stock or do they need to order them first ?

thanks,
eddie

Hey Eddie,

You need to order it online first. I'm sure they could order it for you, but you'll get it for MUCH cheaper online and shipping is free. I used PerformancePeddler.

Then take it to them and have them do the install. Cost should be around $70.
