My Ride: 2006 BMW E60 550i Sport (RIP) • Silbergrau Metallic / Black Dakota leather • LED retrofits external/internal • Bimmertech VividScreen with AppleTV 4
Model Year: 2006
Engine: N62TU 4.8L V8
For sale ($350 obo): BimmerTech VividScreen “SmartViewHD”, a complete plug-and-play retrofit for E60/61/63/64 equipped with CCC or M-ASK head unit with small iDrive screen (in my case, a 2006 550i without factory navigation).
This clever kit essentially (1) upgrades your iDrive screen from 6.5” to 8.8” widescreen (1240x480) with higher contrast, and (2) transforms the screen + BMW sound system into a real AppleTV 4, connecting via AirPlay and wifi to your iPhone, with everything that implies. Control it with your phone, AppleTV remote or other Bluetooth remote. Toggle between media display and the car’s iDrive display with a pushbutton.
This is a different approach from Apple CarPlay, less narrowly optimized for in-car use, but more flexible. You can mirror anything with AirPlay from your iPhone/iPad to the car’s display and audio (I used mostly Spotify music and Waze or Google Maps navigation), or run any compatible AppleTV app on the box. The Multi Media Interface (MMI) “brain” comes equipped with extra composite RCA and HDMI inputs, ready to integrate Bimmertech’s rear view cameras with dynamic parking lines, front view cameras, or other video/audio sources. (I chose not to add the cameras to my E60.)
The included “SmartViewHD” is a stock AppleTV 4 unit with its power supply modded to run from the vehicle’s 12V DC power, with A/V output to the MMI box via standard HDMI cable. Just set your iPhone to create a mobile wifi hotspot and connect. This is better, more reliable connectivity than Bluetooth.
Everything is plug-and-play with included cables, with the single exception that you need to find a good switched 12V supply to tap for the AppleTV itself. Overall this is MUCH simpler than doing a CIC or NBT retrofit (which is why I chose this route for my E60): No replacing hardware controls, programming modules, etc. Easy to uninstall and revert to original iDrive if you sell the vehicle.
See this great 2016 thread by 5series user @BostonJon for an in-depth description, including install experience in his 2007 E61 wagon (he chose to include a back-up camera):

I bought this kit for $900 and installed in my E60 around 2018. Got four years great use out of it. The car is now gone, so I’m looking to resell the kit to another owner-enthusiast. Check out the official Bimmertech DIY install video (you can skip the first half if not installing a back-up camera):
Feel free to post or PM any questions. Thanks for reading!

Another bump. First sale fell through. NOTE this version has an MMI that is compatible with E60/E61 5 series, not E90! (BimmerTech makes another VividScreen that looks identical but has a different MMI for those cars.) Thanks.
