The active headrests form part of the comfort seats package. They prevent possible neck injuries and whiplash in the event of an impact from the rear. In a collision, a gas generator activates a fast-reacting mechanism that immediately slides the entire headrest forward to close the distance between the passenger's head and the headrest.
