Sounds like Mercedes & BMW have the same supplier for it - announced on S class a few weeks back.

What makes the BMW (and presumably the Merc, too) system remarkable is that it is a full-fledged thermal imaging system, rather than an IR emitter/camera or ambient light intensification. For this reason it will be more useful as it will have a longer range and be able to "see" through fog (even in daylight).

To be truthful, I'm not even sure you need IR or thermal imaging. A friend of mine has a backup camera on his SUV that is shockingly good in low light. To the point that you really do see just about everything in the darkest environments. The BMW announcement is a cool feature though.

i have night vision on my 2005 lx470, and the quality is great. it picks up any images that are about 100ft out of range of the xenons. Cant wait for it to be availble on a e60 either.

You're right that the backup cameras have good low light images but that camera technology wouldn't work through fog, shrubbery, etc. Thermal is the way to go (at least for looking forward at speed -- the CCD camera is fine for reverse.)
