I am afraid the 5er iDrive does not run any flavor of Windows. AFAIK, only the first 7er iDrive was running Windows CE, the rest were based on a different OS. Most probably, I'd expect it is direct some kind of Java system but I may be wrong.

"The TLA allows a car's computer guts to stay current even while the car ages. BMW can continually write updates and add-ons that work together without testing, thanks to the underlying Java. Every time a car owner visits a BMW dealer, new software, like a new navigation system, can be added.
very funny

[/quote]Iceman, with all due respect, that does not prove a thing. Linux uses the respective combination also, as it is on a lower level in a PC than OS is (BIOS). Secondly, I doubt it is Windows CE in kiosk mode for several reasons. For start, I've never heard of a Java VM developed for WinCE from Microsoft or Sun.
And yet again, I have no proof and no way of testing my theories... So I may simply be wrong.
However a combination of three random buttons for reboot is not proof of Microsoft behind the scenes... I have samples of PDA, GPS devices, car stereo, that use three buttons combinations to restore factory settings...

Perhaps the fact that there seem to be so many software issues and repeated need for updates points to Microsoft. :'(

I just think that Linux might have been a good choice.

I don't know what it is, but it is not very stable so it can be both, JAVA or MS Windows.
I really don't care..
I would like to have Linux in there, but... wishes...

Oh, ok... My bad...
Linux you say, huh? I agree, but where are you placing the keyboard and the maintenance will cost a fortune... You'll also need a room in the boot for a specialist to boot it up and so on...
