Secondly, where do you get the weight numbers? The 550 is typically shown as over 100lbs less than your number. BMW in the UK for example show the weight of the 550 SE as 1735 kg which is approx 3817lb.
(edit - I see you probably used the weight numbers from MY08 sales brochure)

The majority of the 550's already much greater maximum torque is available from relatively low in the rev range (at around 2000 rpm or so). Essentially, the 550 never puts out less than the 535's maximum and puts out 20% more right in the midrange sweetspot.

Sorry for the lack of clarity in my post. The figures are infact the weight to power ratio, but as it is commonly referred to as the power to weight ratio I used that term. Sorry for the confusion, although I would love to drive a car with a 12.34 horse power to pound ratio. I got the figures off of the 2008 brochure. I agree with BMWSTL - the weight distribution of the two cars is too close to be significant which is one of the reasons why I felt the reviewer was over-reaching in his write up.
