My deep-dive article on iDrive is now on line at bmwcca.org.
The article covers the thinking behind iDrive, early versions, what the new software and hardware upgrades add, and the future of iDrive.
Thanks to everyone here who responded to the poll, which is included in the article (so is a mention of E60.net)

A little story for those that think iDrive is hard to use:
When I got my E61 and my wife was about to use it fort the first time and with her own key fob, I told her that I could help her to turn on the triple blink for the turn indicators. She told me that it was no problem. She managed to turn it on without any help or reading the manual and she had never seen iDrive before. And the language was still set to German with her key fob. Ha, ha!

Thanks Jonathan -- nicely written and, for once, an accurate and honest iDrive article! (Can't wait to see all the haters bash it in the letters section in a future issue!! )
The only thing you forgot to mention is how the Gen3 version also has some screen popups for certain functions. For example, now, when you press the vent settings button (in the center of the temperature dial) the iDrive screen for that individual's climate settings pops up. Also, you get popup screens when activating the seat heater or ventilation. To me, this software improvement makes a great deal of sense -- even more than the favorites buttons...

That was a great article and hopefully catches the right eyes. The public (including me, before I purchased my E60) has been grossly misled as to i drive, and so I hope this starts to get the record straight. As for the pop ups with the seats, I think you have to have venitlated seats to have the pop ups. My '08 has heated seats, but with the traditional 3 stage heat set up.

In fact I was just admiring that feature on the new 5ers but I had finished the article already and didn?t realize this was a brand new feature.

You did a good job of catching 'almost' everything though...
