My deep-dive article on iDrive is now on line at bmwcca.org.
The article covers the thinking behind iDrive, early versions, what the new software and hardware upgrades add, and the future of iDrive.
Thanks to everyone here who responded to the poll, which is included in the article (so is a mention of E60.net)

Thanks Jonathan -- nicely written and, for once, an accurate and honest iDrive article! (Can't wait to see all the haters bash it in the letters section in a future issue!! )
The only thing you forgot to mention is how the Gen3 version also has some screen popups for certain functions. For example, now, when you press the vent settings button (in the center of the temperature dial) the iDrive screen for that individual's climate settings pops up. Also, you get popup screens when activating the seat heater or ventilation. To me, this software improvement makes a great deal of sense -- even more than the favorites buttons...

Hmm I never thought about it...but your right most of the people I know who have the iDrive don't complain. But tons of people who don't have it always complain about it (I also lump the media into this category because they are just test driving not necessarily owners).

Nice summary, well done. The only thing I suggest you add is that only your dealer can tell you what version on Progman you are currently running...
