Looks like Audi will offer ceramic brakes as an option for the A8 (see story from Autoweek here).

Do you guys think BMW should offer this option on the E60? At close to approx. 10k, I'm sort of ambivalent about it, but hate to see Audi "one up" the big Roundel in the sky.

Remember, the A8 is in a different category then the 5. The A8 is 7 company! And Audi has to do something to make up for sales losses to BMW

Much as I love the E60 I thought I read somewhere that Audi was trouncing BMW in its home market as the VdT design was being accepted better than Bangle's ?

I admit that I prefer the image that Audi has in the UK than BMW, but BMW sure know how to make a driving machine...Audi need to engineer the ride better for UK roads before they take over from BMW. IMHO A3 better than 1 series and A8 better than 7 series. A4 just not good enough. TT no match for Z4.

I have friends that have had major problems with ceramic brakes from porsche

have a look at any porsche forum and you will see guys having problems with the brakes

Porsche has reformulated them, but I hear they are still giving problems

Out of 3 friends 2 had the cars converted back to steel brakes

Ferrari also had to reformulate the ceramic brakes for the 360 challenge

Mercedes SLR owners complain the cermaic brakes have no feel and can store up so much heat that the brakedust can catch fire ( as seen on the tv programme topgear's test of the SLR )

So I think ceramic brakes need a few more years of development

Why would i want ceramic brakes? Just because they're lighter?
Ceramic brakes need to reach a very very high temperature to operate at 100% and to reach high temperature you need to drive like a maniac, wich i did in the past but that's just history, and + the ceramic brakes are way way more expensive at service cost. So why would i want them? See no point...I drive normally now, back then i ONCE really drove or raced so hard on the streets that i felt my car couldn't brake anymore even my foot was all way down on the brake, and when i got out i saw incandescent brake discs. I sware it's true, i couldn't bealive it myself...so if you are not a maniac driver like i was, what's the point of ceramic brakes?

ceramic brakes are a waste on everything but the most hardcore of sportscars. theyre more of a marketing gimmick than anything else.

I guess you guys missed the part about ceramic brakes lasting for 180,000+ miles...

They do not rust and typically last about four times as long as conventional steel brakes. Audi claims they can last about 186,000 miles under standard braking conditions.
