As for engines, when we got our 525, I was actually more comfortable getting this engine used, than I was any other BMW engine.

BMW has been doing variants of the 2.5L I6 since gasoline was invented, so I knew this was a durable and reliable engine.

The automotive press raves over the BMW inline 6, and Nissan's VQ series of engines when it comes to V-6's.

For as far back as I can remember (US automotive press), Nissan has always had the "Best V6" while BMW was touted as having the "best six cyinder". As for V-8's, there are a LOT of good V-8's-, but no V-8 sounds as good to me, as a GM V8, big block or small block, 1960's or 2000's- it doesn't matter.

Others sound good too, but- not quite as good... Not even Ford- as far as low end rumble goes... As far as V8 high notes, Ferrari has that in the bag.

Porsche 911 Turbo and the Dodge Viper have the nasty "blatt" sound award sewn up. They both have easily the worse/nastiest (and not in the good way) sounding sports cars revs I have ever heard- but, nasty though it may sound, they are the fastest and most thrilling vehicles I have ever driven. With the auto tranny, and big windshield- the 911 is the easiest to live with.

If you read the article from the link posted you will see that BMW has won for it's V-8 engines as well as the V-10 - so yes, the I6 engine has won the most awards for BMW it is far from being the only thing BMW is good at. The V-8 engine that won is the same one found in the 545i.

Having now owned 2 BMW V8s, I think they are wonderful engines. Smooth and powerful. And the sound of the engine revviing is priceless.
