Lexus Keeps Top Spot in Survey
Of New-Car Quality by J.D. Power

DETROIT ? Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus brand finished first again in the latest survey of new-car quality by market-research firm J.D. Power & Associates, while Ford Motor Co.'s Jaguar improved its initial vehicle quality to become the second-best brand, according to individuals who have seen results of the closely watched survey.

The Lexus brand had just 81 problems per 100 vehicles. Jaguar scored 88 problems per 100.

BMW AG placed third with 95 problems per 100, jumping from its 11th-place finish last year with 109 problems per 100.

As in last year's survey, General Motors Corp. had two of its brands -- Buick and Cadillac -- in the top five finishers of the survey. Buick was No. 4 with 101 problems per 100, followed by Cadillac in fifth place tied with Mercedes-Benz.

Overall, J.D. Power's 2005 Initial Quality Study found that owners of new vehicles reported just 118 problems per 100 vehicles. The initial-quality survey measures how cars perform in the first 90 days of ownership. The publicly released data from the survey won't tell consumers much about the performance of car models across the board or their long-term reliability.

The primary audience of the J.D. Power survey is the auto industry itself, although car makers can use their results in advertising. J.D. Power sells detailed breakdowns of the survey data to the auto makers, which also pay the Westlake Village, Calif., consulting firm handsomely to use its ratings in their ads. That is in contrast to Consumer Reports, which publishes one of the most influential ratings of new vehicles but doesn't allow car makers to advertise when vehicles are recommended by the magazine.

Better yet, the 5 series ranks second in the Mid Luxury segment behind a Lexus (of course). This seems to be a nice improvement from last year. Good job BMW.

Thanks for posting this. I have to say, I was reluctant when I ordered my 545 due to the Consumer Reports reliability rankings, but this makes me feel a lot better. (Although I'm still a bit leary due to all the posts on this site regarding software issues.)

Did they show where Acura ranked? (My other car.)
