Hopefully more engines = reduced cost per engine = less expensive BMWs
Before you answer; hint, all Camry, accord drivers already switch to 535i on their garages.

think of it this way if every other car manufacturer wants to put a BMW engine in their cars what does that really say about BMW?
well it says that BMW produces better and more reliable engines HANDS DOWN.
i really don't care if they do it but if they do if it will defintely increase awareness about the BMW brand and the reliability of their engines.
why else would other car manufacturers want to add BMW engines to their cars?
well one thing would be cost but i seriously doubt BMW is going to be selling there engines at a significant discount and if they do +1 for BMW owners.
now you'll be able to buy a "BMW" engine at a discount if yours somehow get trashed.

My Ride: 2011, X6 Hybrid . Alpine White , every option. 20" Conti' NON runflats,OEM trunk spoiler , LUX V3 AE's , HP Thunder Fogs , custom front bumper reflector delete........
It's all good ! The financial impact will be positive to BMW and helps offset R&D costs , A GM will always be a GM ( some just might have a better motor or tranny )

There is nothing new about this.
You need to know that in the past BMW has sold for example Diesel engines to Opel (part of GM). Few years back you could buy a new Opel Omega diesel (not that any right-minded would ) with BMW 6-cylinder engine here in Europe.
I don't think this move makes BMW look bad, only the competitors may benefit from better engines.

This gives BMW a good reputation for their fine built engines. It benefits both BMW and competitors and gives BMW enthusiasts more confidence in riding in a Bimmer.

If 535i (due to platform sharing with GM) cost $30000 would you still buy one.

I fully support it based on these two facts:
1) more engines in production (and put in more American cars) means that more and cheaper aftermarket parts and performance parts will be developed and available,
and
2) more mechanics will learn how to work on them, so it will be easier to find non-dealers to service them when they are out of warranty.
Both of those are good for BMW owners.

In the mid '80's BMW diesel engines were an option in Lincoln's. One of the benefits was I could buy oil and air filters at a lower price by going to my local L-M dealer. The diesel engines were also installed in a mid-sized recreational vehicle ... think it was called a Viper (no relation to the current Dodge).

Regarding the GM situation, even if BMW give them their engines, they might not give them the software. The Double VANOS technology is something I would imagine they would like to keep in their own house. So really it could come down to how GM's development engineers sort out getting the max out of the BMW motor (shouldnt be that hard to do) right???

IMO BMW makes the best small displacement 6 cylinder motors on the planet, so I think it would be interesting to see if GM adapts BMW motors in some of their sedans.
You will never see a BMW motor in a GM truck, SUV, or sports car.
