It IS a prototype BMW, used for testing. Not just "somebody" having fun, but not everything that you see on such cars will make it to the production.
This shifter has been seen in spypics on the new X5 and the facelifted E60/E61 as well as on the F10...
I've seen the pics of the new X5, I just wasn't sure if maybe someone decided to have a little fun and put the X5 shifter in an E60. Either way, thanks for the info, I personally am not a fan of this shift knob, I'll stick with the one I've got.

It is more ergonomical. It's the new electronic shifter similar to the 7 series one. For applying the parking all you have to do is press the button over the top.

It's the future anyway. All we have to expect now is a similar idea for the steering wheel.

what appears strange to me is that this new gearlever has the electric parking brake (similar to new x5) but the picture still shows the "bay" in the console where the "oldfashioned" parkingbrake lever is in the current model...

That's the new Auto shifter. The P is "Park", not the "parking brake", what is still there.
P means tranny goes to park. Parking brake is in addition, for the wheels.

Hopefully it will be fitted on the final product as well as the new X5, as soon as the facelifted cars are available.

As per this article: http://www.worldcarfans.com/spyphotos.cfm/...ift-latest-pics the facelifted 5 series in spring '07, will have a new auto gearbox:

The one above looks like the new SMG gearbox. Can anyone confirm if it will be the same for the steptronic as well?

Did you see that there is an "stau" (=traffic jam) knob next to the lever?

What should this mean. Something to prevent creeping forward while your foot is off the brake?

I don't really like how that knob looks. Maybe it'll look better when I see it in person.
