Wait for a year after it released so most of transmission and new V8 issues sorted out. Just think about M5 when it first came out. Transmission issue, oil pump, etc. Now it's much better.

True, you should never buy a car just after it's released. But on the other hand, there are several things in life you "shouldn't do", but you do it anyway! If you want the M3 badly, go for it!

i think yor're wrong assuming no one in socal put a deposit down for a new m3. i would think the list is more like 100 already. so get in quickly if you are so inclined to get one. they will be hot especially with the new v8

You should contact brian1225. He already put down his deposit for a new M3 and he's also located in SoCal.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is several people on the waiting list, especially in SoCal. Some dealers might charge you a premium to capitalize on the demand.
I wouldn't worry too much about it being the first production model. BMW comes with warranty!

I got on the list and did not have to put a deposit? Maybe Because I called the same Sales Manager that I used to order my 550?
I go through Stevens Creek BMW in Santa Clara.
