I'd get the M3 instead. Don't get me wrong, I love the new Z4, but I just can't get over the price, especially compared to the M3 - how come?

The new Z4 is a hard top convertible. The current M3 is not.

Even a 335i convertible with the right options can cost as much as an M3

Actually there are insane deals out there on hard-top convertible M3's.

The driving experience of the M3 is 110% better than the Z4.

WHAT? What happened to a M3 Cabrio? It is as hard-top convertible as any Z4 will ever be.

I thought the price comparison was being made between the Z4 and M3 Coupe

I wasn't thinking about the Cabrio when I typed that post, but figured the price difference between the two convertibles would be much bigger. However JetBlack50C said you can get a good deal on these as well.

I stand corrected.

Obviously I'm loosing space and utility trading for the Z4. I'm not buying it for the utility. As stated above, I've got the 550i for when I need a rear seat or trunk space. I will have to figure out the best way to transport my bike, of which I've done only 3-4 times this year.

Pricing out the M3 hardtop vert on bmwusa.com its $11k-$13k more than the comparibly equiped Z4. That works out to $500 per month on a lease!!!! You have to get nav with the extended leather on the M3, not with the Z4. That gets it the $2k closer (13-11). It would have to be dealer incentives to get big discounts. Amazingly, just this past week, Z4 lease rates improved enough to be a $100 per month difference over earlier rates. That made the 3.5 TT model the same monthly payment that the 3.0 used to be.

There's not a huge performance difference between the two. The Z4 is 300 hp, 34000 lbs, and the M3 vert is 414hp and 4150 lbs. BMW rates both 0-60's at 5.1. Both offer a DCT but I want the 6 speed. The M3 vert has a semi-usable rear seat and the Z4 actually has a bit more trunk space. I like the M3 coupe looks but prefer the Z4 styling over the M3 vert. I'm sure the M3 coupe would out handle the new Z4 but I'm not sure the porky vert would.

Bottom line, I really like the styling of the Z4, and the driving experience. It's simply a matter of telling myself I want to spend the money for it.

If you like it get it, you can always get like a Trek carrier for your 550 when you want to use the bike. And you'll love the drophead as the weather gets warmer.

Or cooler. It's been mid 90's all week. I'm strongly considering ordering a specific car. It could be perfect September weather whn it arrives.

Oh yeah, that would be perfect timing for a back country road trip (gotta test it right?)
