Have seen this in 'Car' mag I think, but that was a year or two ago. The most recent mention I've seen was on British TV, on the motoring show 'Fifth Gear'. The presenter visited the 'Van Horssen Group', which is an ultra-exclusive millionaires car club based at Scottsdale Airport in AZ. (here's a story on them

Basically the cost and rarity of any car they intend getting isn't a problem for them, and the interesting thing was that while the presenter was in their office, apparently more or less alone with the crew, there was a bunch of post-it's about car's and bookings they had coming up and notes of such details etc etc, and he specifically picked out and made surprised mention of one which said 'BMW Z9' and had a date of a year or two from now as I recall. I don't think it was staged (why bother with that specific model?) and this group would be very likely candidates as prospective owners who might receive advanced info from BMW.
This is the show's website with brief details of that episode:

More rumors about a Z10.
Twin turbo V10...
So much BS out there, but a fact is that a new 525d engine
will be availble at the facelift next spring: 197 hp and 400 Nm.
This engine can be purchased in a 325d - now.

I think Automobile Magazine had something about a possible 2010 or 2011 Z car larger than the Z4 but smaller than the 6 series. There is also rumors of a return of the Z8 but it might be the same story I thinking of.
