I have a 1997 528i. The rear vents always blow cold air. The heat in the front is GREAT but the rear vents are always blowing cold. Does anyone know why this could be? Have any of you had this problem. I really would love to know how to fix this because I have a 3 year old. I wouldn't worry about it if he weren't riding back there. Thanks for any suggestions.

Are you talking about the rear vent behind the center console or the rear floor vents? If you're referring to the center vent, did you adjust the temperature dial toward the red dot?

Edit: I just realized you're talking about an E39 and not an E60. I still think that my questions are valid but I'm not sure I remember what the rear vents look like on an E39. (I must have a photo somewhere...)

they are on the center console in the backseat right above the cup holders. There is no temperature dial just one to turn the vents off.

If I remember correctly, on the E39 that vent was not designed for heating, just cooling or outside air. There should be heating ducts under each front seat that provide heat to the rear cabin so in the winter, since there's no temperature adjsutment, just shut off the center console one and you should be good to go...
