3-4 years , can you wait that long
That means I have 3-4 years in which to double my income and get a professional racing license

Age old problem - what do you mean by fast - 0-60mph, top speed, in gear acceleration or round a track?

Only way to know for sure is too race the new m3 and the m5 round a couple of 'different' circuits.

I think the laws of physics will overcome the m5's engine and the m3 will win. Either way I'd love to see it

But..... BMW don't always comply with the laws of physics:

M5 did the top gear lap in 1.26.2

M3 CSL managed just 1.28.0

The only proper (4 seat) car road car to best the M5 is the Evo FQ 400 at 1.24.8

The e46 will not win the contest with the e60 m5 not even on a track. Of course if the track is made only by corners and S turns and stuff...the m3 will win, not by much but it will win. The real e46 to match the m5 on a normal track is the csl.
Also bear in mind that the csl lap you are quoteing is a wet lap while the m5 isn't. They say (at tg) that you have to substract a few seconds (3-4) to get the aprox dry time. I don't 100% agree since as the car is more and more performant it can't be the same time to substract but anyway in that case the battle would have really heatened up. My money would be on the csl.
I agree that for now there is no road car (4 seater) that can match the m5 performance. 4 door better said... i can think of some 4 seater that can smoke the m5.

Apart from the EVO FQ 400 that is

If BMW do as good a job on the new M3 as they have on the current M5, then the smaller lighter more nimble car SHOULD win through on the track - have to wait and see.

Mmmm 2 things to clear up:
1. Does a porsche turbo count as a 4 seater?
2. I was refering to the e46 m3 vs the e60 m5. I have no doubts that the new e90 m3 will smoke the m5 on a track. It's like comparing in a way the 330i vs 540i.

Agreed the m5 clearly wallops the m3 - which is pretty stunning stuff.

I think I'd rather sit in the back of an m5 rather than a porsche

Yup. Of course. I wonder if an adult of say a medium weight of 80 kilos can sit in any way in the back of a porsche, and is yes how long?

ALMOST?
You really have to define almost since i think there is no competition in any way between the e46 m3 and the e60 m5.
