I think M3 will be the fastest BMW for that release year for the fact its simply lighter. Current E46 M3 is ALMOST as fast as E60 m5......
hmmm. How much is almost? I'm not familar with e46 m3 current performance. Thanks,

answer is its nowhere near as fast. By the time your at 100mph in the m3 the m5 is doing close to 150mph

Age old problem - what do you mean by fast - 0-60mph, top speed, in gear acceleration or round a track?

Only way to know for sure is too race the new m3 and the m5 round a couple of 'different' circuits.

I think the laws of physics will overcome the m5's engine and the m3 will win. Either way I'd love to see it

But..... BMW don't always comply with the laws of physics:

M5 did the top gear lap in 1.26.2

M3 CSL managed just 1.28.0

The only proper (4 seat) car road car to best the M5 is the Evo FQ 400 at 1.24.8

Nope I think the M5 time was faster than all of the astons except the DBR9 which is frankly a bit of a beast.
