Despite all the talk about which car is faster and whatnot, saving your life is most important. I doubt a lesser brand would have saved their lives. A friend of mine thought it was ridiculous that I spent 50K on a BMW when his camry was 30K and faster. I mentioned the the whole surviving an accident and the matter did not seem so ridiculous to him.

That is WHY you give them a BMW they wouldnt have survived in a Civic.

Edit: Let me rephrase, I dont want Honda lawyers knocking on my door. "That is WHY you give them a BMW they wouldnt have survived in a car similar to say like a Civic"

I believe frontal impact ratings are better for an '09 civic than an '09 5er - five stars versus three.

Those ratings are totally subjective to what the extent is of the impact. A civic, or any Honda, may withstand a low-speed impact but, at 70mph, forget it. The BMW will fair much better. I'll take on a civic with any BMW any day. Could you imagine what a Honda would look like with that type of impact? And I doubt they would have lived.

I was going to say the same thing, but instead of naming a specific brand and model, I would say that they are alive because they were driving a BMW. Any lesser brand and they would probably be dead.

Would you like to see the BMW given to me when I was 19 just a year ago and see what condition it's in? I'm sure a 40 year old can total BMW just as well as this 19 year old did. Don't make it an age thing.

Show your friend the link to that news story and ask him if his and his family's life is worth an extra 20k?

This is why you don't give 19yr olds a 5:

Two teenagers are recovering from a car crash in Parley's Canyon that nearly left them underwater late Tue. night. The entire roof of the car was removed to get them out. Sam Lamb, 19-yr-old driver, was flown to Intermountain Medical Center with serious injuries. He is expected to be released sometime Wed. His passenger, 16-yr-old Lina Nguyen, was flown to the University of Utah Medical Center in critical condition.

Glad they survived at least.

Wasn't there someone on the board looking for an engine?
I had a similar crash I was then 22 years old racing down a small two lane road when the car looses rear grip on a bumpy road at the speed of 230Km/h (144Mp/h) at fly's off into a forest flying flipping all over...

Now Im 25 no more crazy speeding and acting a fool on the road... I lived thank god and that 5er walked away with bruises which was unbelievable...

"Crews had to remove the entire roof of the car to get the teens out.
Sam Lamb, 19-year-old driver, was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray with serious injuries. He has since been upgraded to fair and is expected to be released sometime Wednesday. His passenger, a 16-year-old Lina Nguyen, was flown to the University of Utah Medical Center in serious to critical condition.

Troopers say speeding likely caused the accident."
Accidents are almost a guaranteed outcome when the driver's ability is exceeded ... The smartest of cars cannot (always) compensate for dumb drivers! And, this isn't always measured in the number of years of driving experience - there are lots of very talented young drivers out there who take driving very seriously.
