Hi members!

I am searching for M3 acceleration times ... I found something like 15.7 from 0 to 200 kmh (0-125 mph), by Autobild, but it is clearly impossible : the 6MT M3 has very long gears, so it cannot do 15.7s .
Otherwise the SMG3 M3 would do the same time of the M5 (due to shorter gears than the MT), that is obviously impossible .
(the M5 does 14.5-15 seconds)

So, does someone have these times from some road test ?

Thanks!

I'm not quite clear on why this all looks so impossible, Alex... The power/weight ratio of the M3 isn't THAT far off the M5. Of course, a 545i would whup them all, but that's another matter...

Anyhow, it _is_ faster than a 545i...

"In our limited test, the M3 charged to 60 miles an hour in 4.4 seconds. That?s 0.4 second quicker than the last M3 we tested, despite a slippery road surface and hurried test schedule. Expect the ?08 to be even quicker when we get a chance to conduct a full road test." Car & Driver Sep 2007

It's a little curious that 2-3 magazines report the *same* time ...

With a manual transmission and a good road surface the 0-100 is quite simple .
Anyway, the 0-100 is not so significant: too elements affect the result, like the tire, temperature, humidity, type of transmission, etc. ...
From 100 to 200, instead, no tricks .

So, the M3 would do 11s from 100 to 200 .
Okay, I would like to trust those magazines...

Don't be so certain about this

We said the M3 goes from 100 to 200 in 11s .

Ok, look at this clip :

100-200 in less than 12s :-D

That man starts very slowly, without acceleration assist and with the DSC on .

So a 650i with a new (custom) exhaust would be fast as the M3!

Now the best part :
1. a 545i weighs like that 650i .
2. I am planning to get the same final drive ratio as that 650i, so equal gears .
3. The same gearbox .
4. But I will have more HP than that 650i (soon a dynojet to demonstrate it)

----
M3 gears and speeds :

@8500 rpm :

(kmh) 67.0, 114.7, 171.8, 228.1, 271.8, 311.7

AlexFW's 545i with 3.23 ratio @6500 rpm :

(kmh) 58.9, 99.6, 151.1, 200.6, 239.1, 274.2
----

Obviously, I will be fast as the M3 due to its looong gears (it has a 230 kmh 4th gear while I will have 200-205) .
And the "SMG3" M3, with 7 gears, will be faster than me .

This in theory .
Practically, on the road the M3 has 25% less torque than a 550i/650i (400 Nm vs 500) and a manual gearbox (so the slowest part in the M3 is the driver) .

I am at 18.5s now and my target is 16s with new FDR and catalysts/headers .

Finally, dear ipp, in the everyday use my 545i is already faster than the M3, so keep your irony for your 530d!

Will see!

Don't be so negative about 545i, hythe :

a) you have a 545i that is faster than the M5 .
b) on bends/mountain road my 545i is faster than yours (and you know why - signature)
