Had a 120d auto loaner the other day and can honestly say it was the dogs wotsits! 
The auto box gives the car (had a manual version on loan before) a smooth executive feeling under normal driving conditions. Give it some stick round country lanes and the steptronic mode combined with the trick handling make it one hell of a fun car to drive. 
Shame the one series looks like its been set on fire and put out with a sledgehammer though. :'(

It really is an awesome car the 1 series, you should have a go in the 130i, fantastic little thing.
135i or an M1 would seriously tempt me away from the 535d.
