The twin turbo V8 at the heart of the X5 M is a technological tour de force. Once you get going the aural pleasures get more interesting. There is the sound of turbos spooling from time to time but there is also a wonderful series of backpressue pops on overrun. After that it all gets a little weird with what can only be describes as flatulence. Yup. It?s hard to describe it any other way. It ultimately became endearing and part of the character of the car.
And then there is this: In fact we?ve heard rumors that the X5 M is actually faster around the ?Ring than the E60 M5. Yikes.
Bottom line: The truth is that there is no denying the X5 M has been touched by the magic of M in enough of the right ways.
And from the folks at Autoblog...
It's upsettingly fast, brutally athletic and the glorious brakes are most likely banned F1 technology. Swathed in many gallons of Monte Carlo Blue Metallic paint, its bulgy looks have even grown on me. Moreover, it delivers a mule-kick upside the head of Newtonian physics. The M might as well stand for Magic.
There does seem to be this common reaction among auto writers to the X6 M and X5 M ... "how'd they do that?" Magic indeed.
I cannot wait to see what all this means for the next M5.
