I think that Jeep's are also worth a look.

Thanks Krozi.....Used Jeep prices are right and I love their utility.
They score well on most crash tests too. Unfortunately, their frontal offset scores are marginal to poor..

It's a death machine if you crash though.
Do the Grand Cherokee's even have stability control? I am not sure if they do.

My Ride: 2009 550i sports, Nav, logic Best E60 yet
2004 545i, sports pkg, logic 7 steptronic, rear shade, orient blue with beige interior, blue tooth enabled Razer Phone. 2004 X5 3.0, sports pkg, stepronic, summer pkg. imola red.
2006 Mini Cooper S, manual, sports, prem pkg, nav and kitchen sink.
Maintaining the X5 will be costly, 16 year olds are tough on cars, I'd go with the toyota. I got my 16 year old a second hand Toyata which she destroyed after 3 months. Kids......................

i'm 16 myself(need to be 18+ tho here for driving), imo if u can trust ur son u dont need a 'safe' car like volvo's, X5 would be great but are u sure he can afford the gas of a big car?

It's the other idiot drivers you have to watch out for.

what do u want him to ride ? nothing? every car gets damage , not every drunk guy is gonna slam ur car
You can not be serious?
You can not expect someone, regardless of age, to know what every driver on the road is going to do.

My son is soon to turn 16 and he's been learning to drive on daddy's 550
As long as he keeps his grades-up and behavior clean, we've promised to get him a car. Safety and reliability top the list of considerations and of course it needs to fall in a given price range too ($14k or below)...
My neighbor has a 2002 X5 with the 3 Litre six banger with about 82kmiles on it. One owner vehicle in uber nice condition. Safety ratings on that vehicle are fantastic and I like the size too (not to big and not to small).
My concern would be putting him in a bimmer as his first car (a little spoiled??) and the speediness of the X5..
Thoughts?
Other vehicles being considered are Escape, Rav4 and Honda CRV. All would need to have ABS, side/canopy bags.
