I think you made the right call, JayEll. I think you're dead on in your underlying point, I suspect that most of us in a higher performance car are not using anything even close to its potential without regular access to the autobahns or the track, and ultimately the X1 is going to serve you better for what you need. I remember my time in Mercedes A-Class loaner when my Merc was in for servicing work when I lived in the UK, and I was amazed at the interior space from such a small overall package, I think that's the same trick you're seeing the X1 pull off so successfully. Anyway - it's a perfect car for what you need, and congrats on the new acquisition!

Congrats on the new ride -- nicely specced.
I sat in one of these the other day, a very basic model, and was a little surprised at the "cheap" quality feel on some of the items in the interior, e.g. storage area on the dash. It didn't seem right for a BMW, even if it is one of the smaller models. What are your impressions?
Good choice of engine too; twin turbo for fun acceleration and plenty of torque for relaxed cruising. You rational makes perfect sense.
Enjoy!

if people thought i was crazy when i dowgraded from a 535d to a 520d, i wonder what they will say to you (m5 to x1) - all i can say is: i fully understand your decision and it seriously makes sense. a nake x1 looks terrible but yours does look like a very very decent car! congrats!!
