German luxury automaker BMW and Korean manufacturer Hyundai are currently engaged in talks regarding a possible partnership, reports Automotive News.
The potential collaboration would see BMW and Hyundai co-develop a new engine platform for future vehicles in an attempt to help weather development costs that could inflate up to anywhere between $1.3-2.6 billion.
It?s been reported by a Germany industry newsletter Automobil Produktion that Hyundai Chariman Chung Mong-koo?s son, Chung Eui-sun, had met with a small group of BMW managers in Munich this week, though the publication was unable to cite its sources.
Neither Hyundai nor BMW have yet to make a statement regarding any joint venture. At present, BMW has established partnerships with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, Toyota, and Daimler. A possible deal with General Motors is currently in the works.
BMW ? which is ahead of German rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz as the current leading luxury automaker ? announced back in March it was working on a new engine architecture that would improve aspects across the board for its three, four, and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines.
While nothing is confirmed, a potential partnership could, from an economic standpoint, prove beneficial to both BMW and Hyundai should these reported talks prove accurate and fruitful. In addition, Hyundai may be poised to gain more out this deal than the Germans: the Korean automaker will certainly be aided in its continued effort to provide more credibility within the automotive world with a prestigious partner such as BMW.
