I just got a new M3 and my question is what are the optimal rpm to shift at because I am not used to driving a manual and I am a bit out of the loop. I drove an eclipse before this. I just want to know if I am babying my car too much because I normally shift into 3rd gear around 4000 rpms. Can someone explain the art of shifting in this BMW SMG that has a bit more experience than I do.

I have an smg m3 and always shift it myself so I don't bump my head on the steering wheel when it decides to shift. The only time it is in auto mode is when my wife drives it (she hates it). You have to lift your foot (ever so slightly) at the same time you upshift the paddle. Also tap the gas on downshifts. This will help smooth things out.

I think alot of people worry too much about the SMG and the noises it makes, as John says, if you want to drive smoothly then keep it in S4 and lift of the gas a little as you change up and again when changing down, but you don't have to lift off at all you can stick it in S6, or maybe leave it is S5 while getting used to it, and just redline it, and change gear, don't need to lift off at all, it will make some noise at the rear but that is normal.

Just drive it like you stole it, that is what it is designed for.
