Of course I would test drive both cars if I had the chance. But like I said, I'm stuck here in Kosovo.

The X3 has better interior space than the X5 and the older X5 does not have X drive, which all the X3's do.
You can also get the twin turbo 3.0d in the X3 SD, which is very quick.
I onwed an early X3 3.0 petrol and it was great to drive and very versatile. So much bad press I couldn't believe it.
I'd recommend you test drive first and then decide.
If I could have got a 3.0d at launch, I'm sure we'd still have the car.

I would echo red-max's comments - the 2004 535d is a great car but the 2005s are generally thought to be much more reliable (try a calendar week 9 '05 model) so getting a 2005 would pay off in the end, although they are pricier from an initial cost stand point.
Can you get a '05 530d???
Otherwise I would suggest the 330d coupe.

Yes, I will be on vacation early January, but then it will be too late to order my BMW if I want it delivered before May. And if I won't have the car before May, I can't get it tax-free, which means double the car price! :'(
tax-free, I would die for it in HK itis 120% tax on cars in HK.
They don`t even think about it
Go and get the 5er you will be very happy, I know it.

Thank you everyone for your help. Right now I'm debating between these choices:
new 525d 3/2007 facelift
530d 2005/2006 with many options, low mileage
535dA 2004 (+2005)
new 525d 3/2007 facelift
530d 2005/2006 with many options, low mileage
535dA 2004 (+2005)
